India’s Race for the CDMO Crown | Express Pharma

India is at an important point in the evolution of its CDMO industry. As global pharmaceutical companies look to diversify manufacturing beyond China, India has an opportunity to move beyond being an alternative manufacturing destination and establish itself as a strategic partner for global pharma.

The opportunity is significant. India’s CRDMO industry is projected to grow from around $3–3.5 billion in 2024 to $22–25 billion by 2035. But capturing this opportunity will require more than cost competitiveness and available manufacturing capacity. Customers are increasingly looking for partners who can support complex molecules, peptides, ADCs and HPAPIs, while bringing strong regulatory capabilities, scientific expertise, flexibility and consistent execution.

In the Express Pharma cover story, Hari Kiran Chereddi, Founder, MD & CEO, HRV Pharma, joins industry leaders in discussing what Indian CDMOs need to do differently as the global manufacturing landscape evolves. The discussion looks at the gaps that still need to be addressed, from specialised capabilities and regulatory agility to programme management, technology transfer and supply reliability.

For India to truly benefit from China+1, diversification has to translate into long-term trust. As Chereddi puts it, the companies that are selected first, rather than as a backup, will be the ones that move beyond selling manufacturing capacity and start selling certainty.
